Overband Electro Magnet Separator

Self-cleaning cross-belt separation for large tramp metal

The Overband Electro Magnet Separator is suspended above a conveyor belt to intercept ferrous tramp metal too large or embedded for a drum separator to reliably catch. An electromagnetic coil generates a powerful field that reaches down through the material bed, lifting nails, bolts, rebar off-cuts, and other tramp metal clear of the product. Most units are self-cleaning: an internal cross-belt continuously carries captured metal to the side of the conveyor and drops it outside the product path, so the line never has to stop for manual clean-out. Suspension height and field strength are matched to burden depth and belt speed at the design stage. This is the standard choice for protecting crushers, shredders, and mills on cement, recycling, and quarry lines where large tramp metal is a real risk to equipment.

  • • Self-cleaning cross-belt or in-line discharge
  • • Powered coil for strong, adjustable field depth
  • • Suspension height engineered to burden depth
  • • Continuous operation, no line stoppage for clean-out
  • • Suitable for large tramp metal, not just fines
  • • Weatherproof housing for outdoor installation
  • • Custom belt length and width per conveyor
  • • Protects crushers, shredders, and hammer mills

How it works

The magnet body is suspended over the conveyor at a calculated height above the material bed, either in-line (running the same direction as the belt) or cross-belt (mounted at an angle to discharge to the side). A powered coil generates a magnetic field that penetrates down through the burden depth, lifting ferrous tramp metal up against the underside of the magnet's own moving belt. That internal belt continuously transports captured metal away from the working zone and releases it outside the main product stream, typically to a side chute or bin. Because the magnet's own belt is always moving, the unit self-cleans without needing the main conveyor to stop. Suspension height, belt speed, and field strength are set based on burden depth and the size of tramp metal expected, so the system can be tuned for either fine embedded metal or large rebar and structural off-cuts.

Applications

Quarry and cement crushing plants, recycling and shredding lines, coal handling, and any high-burden conveyor where large or deeply embedded tramp metal poses a risk to crushers or mills.

Frequently asked questions

In-line or cross-belt — which do I need?

Cross-belt suits narrow conveyors with side discharge space; in-line suits wider belts where metal is dropped ahead of the burden.

How is suspension height decided

It is calculated from burden depth, belt speed, and expected tramp metal size during the design stage.

Does the unit stop the conveyor to discharge metal?

No, the self-cleaning belt discharges continuously without stopping the main line.

Can this catch metal buried inside the material bed?

Yes, the electromagnet's field is sized to penetrate the full expected burden depth.
