Permanent Magnetic Drum Separator

Power-free tramp iron removal for continuous bulk conveying

The Permanent Magnetic Drum Separator gives plants a maintenance-light, power-free way to keep tramp iron out of conveyed bulk material. A stationary arc of high-energy ferrite or rare-earth magnets sits inside a rotating outer shell, producing a steady magnetic field along the full working face without any coil, cabling, or power supply. This makes it a strong fit for sites with unreliable electricity, outdoor installations, or lines where running new power cabling is impractical. Ferrous tramp metal and fines are captured as material discharges over the drum and are carried out of the product stream before being released into a dedicated collection point. Because there is no coil to overheat or fail, the unit runs continuously with very little upkeep. Latif Engineering builds drum shells and magnet arrays to match the exact belt width and material characteristics of each installation.

  • • No electrical power required, zero running cost for the magnet
  • • High-energy ferrite or rare-earth magnet arrays
  • • Constant field strength, unaffected by voltage fluctuation
  • • Sealed, low-maintenance bearing design
  • • Custom shell diameter and face width per conveyor
  • • Suitable for outdoor and remote installations
  • • No coil overheating or electrical failure risk
  • • Long service life with minimal upkeep

How it works

A fixed magnet assembly, built from high-energy permanent magnets, is mounted inside a rotating drum shell that replaces or supplements the conveyor's head pulley. As material discharges off the belt, it passes over the drum face where the stationary magnetic field pulls ferrous particles against the rotating shell while non-magnetic product continues on its normal trajectory and falls clear. The shell keeps rotating, carrying captured metal past the edge of the magnet arc, where the field drops off and the tramp metal releases into a separate discharge chute. Because the magnet strength never varies with power supply or load, separation performance stays consistent shift after shift. The design has no windings, insulation, or electronic components to maintain, which is why it is often chosen for remote sites, outdoor stockyards, and applications where downtime for electrical faults cannot be tolerated.

Frequently asked questions

Is a permanent drum as strong as an electromagnetic one?

For most fine-to-medium tramp iron it performs comparably; for very heavy tramp pieces an electro drum with adjustable field is usually stronger.

Does the magnet strength weaken over time?

High-energy permanent magnets lose very little strength over years of normal operation when kept within rated temperature limits.

Can it work outdoors?

Yes, it is commonly chosen for outdoor stockyards because it needs no power connection.

What magnet grade do you use?

Ferrite or neodymium magnets, selected based on required field strength and material characteristics.
