Permanent Suspension Magnet

Fixed overhead magnet for manual or periodic tramp metal removal

The Permanent Suspension Magnet is a fixed plate-type unit suspended above a conveyor belt or feed chute, designed for lines with low tramp metal loads where a self-cleaning system is not economically necessary. High-energy magnets housed in a sealed plate hold captured ferrous tramp metal on the underside of the unit until it is cleared manually during scheduled maintenance. Because it has no moving parts and no power requirement, it is one of the lowest-cost and lowest-maintenance ways to add a layer of tramp metal protection ahead of sensitive equipment. It is commonly used as a secondary safeguard downstream of a drum or overband separator, or as the sole protection on lighter-duty lines. Latif Engineering builds the plate to the exact width of the conveyor or chute opening it will protect.

  • No electrical power required
  • No moving parts, minimal maintenance
  • High-energy magnet plate for strong holding force
  • Simple retrofit above existing conveyors or chutes
  • Effective as primary or secondary protection
  • Custom plate width per application
  • Low capital and running cost
  • Sealed housing resists dust and moisture

How it works

The magnet plate is mounted directly above the material stream on a conveyor or inside a gravity feed chute, close enough to the material bed for its field to act on the full depth of flow. As material passes beneath, ferrous tramp metal is pulled upward and held against the underside of the plate by the fixed magnetic field. Because the unit has no discharge belt, captured metal accumulates on the plate face over time rather than being continuously removed. Operators periodically stop the line, or use scheduled shutdown windows, to manually clear the plate before capture capacity is reached and the field would otherwise start losing effective holding strength on new material. This simple, static design is chosen where tramp metal loads are light enough that manual clean-out intervals are practical.

Light-duty conveyors and feed chutes, secondary protection downstream of a primary separator, food and grain handling with low metal contamination risk, and general bulk material lines.

Frequently asked questions

How often does the plate need to be cleaned?

Depends on tramp metal load; typical schedules range from daily to weekly, set during commissioning.

Can this replace an overband magnet entirely?

For light contamination loads yes; for heavier or continuous tramp metal an overband with self-cleaning is recommended.

Does it need any power connection?

No, it operates entirely passively with no electricity.

Can it be mounted over a chute instead of a conveyor?

Yes, it is commonly installed above gravity feed chutes as well as conveyor belts.
