Overband Permanent Magnet Separator

Power-free overband separation for light to medium tramp metal

The Overband Permanent Magnet Separator delivers the same suspended, self-cleaning cross-belt separation as an electro overband, using a fixed array of high-energy magnets instead of a powered coil. It is the practical choice where tramp metal loads are light to moderate and a permanent electrical connection to the suspension structure is impractical or costly, such as outdoor stockyards, mobile crushing plants, and remote conveyor runs. Captured tramp metal is carried away and discharged by an internal self-cleaning belt, keeping the main line running without interruption. Because there is no coil, there is no risk of electrical failure interrupting protection, and running costs are limited to routine mechanical maintenance. Latif Engineering sizes the magnet array and suspension height to the specific burden depth and belt speed of each installation.

  • No electrical power required for the magnet array
  • Self-cleaning internal belt, continuous discharge
  • High-energy ferrite or neodymium magnets
  • Suitable for outdoor and remote sites
  • Custom suspension height and belt length
  • Consistent field strength, unaffected by voltage
  • Low running cost, minimal maintenance
  • Weatherproof housing

How it works

A fixed array of high-energy permanent magnets is mounted inside the suspended magnet housing, positioned above the conveyor at an engineered suspension height. As material passes beneath, the magnetic field pulls ferrous tramp metal up and holds it against the underside of the unit's own internal belt. That belt continuously moves, carrying captured metal to the side or end of the unit where it is released outside the main product stream, typically into a side chute. The main conveyor never needs to stop for this discharge cycle. Because the magnet array is passive, field strength does not vary with electrical supply, giving consistent capture performance as long as suspension height and belt speed stay within the design range. This design is favoured wherever a dependable power connection to an overhead structure is difficult to install or maintain.

Frequently asked questions

Does the internal belt need power even though the magnet doesn't?

Yes, a small motor drives the self-cleaning discharge belt; only the magnet field itself is power-free.

Is it strong enough for heavy rebar or large tramp metal?

It suits light to moderate tramp loads; for heavy or deeply embedded metal an electro overband is recommended.

Can suspension height be adjusted after installation?

Yes, within the engineered range, to fine-tune capture as burden depth changes.

How often does the magnet array need replacing?

High-energy magnets typically retain effective strength for many years under normal operating temperatures.
